In the frame of the MAVA project “A Campaign on Coastal wetlands”, this report aims to provide a state of the art assessment of the available knowledge about Mediterranean coastal wetlands. It is not a full systematic synthesis of available literature, but rather a compilation of available data and knowledge with the partners of the MedWet Initiative and MAVA projects (2018-2022) complemented by cherry-picked results available in the literature. Where possible, detailed information for Albania, Italy, Montenegro, and Tunisia is provided, as they are countries of particular interest for this MAVA project.
This report can therefore serve as a source of inspiration and information for authorities and decision makers at national and European level when they are involved in negotiations with impacts on Mediterranean coastal wetlands. In addition, it can be used by active voices in social media, such as the private (business) sector, the general public, the media, and consultants.
This report contributes to the four key topics:
- Ecosystem processes
- Recreation/tourism/cultural aspects
- Water provision and regulation
- Climate change
